China Travel Essentials 2026

We design trips across China for a living. This is the exact gear we tell our own travelers to bring — nothing more, nothing less.

🔌 Power & Charging

China runs on 220V with Type A, C and I sockets. And since 2025, power banks without CCC certification are banned from domestic flights in China — this catches travelers constantly.

Must Have

Universal Travel Adapter (with Type I)

Why: US/EU two-pin plugs often fit, but anything grounded (3-pin) won't. A universal adapter covering Type I sockets keeps your laptop and camera chargers alive everywhere from Beijing hotels to Yunnan guesthouses.

CCC-Certified Power Bank (≤100Wh)

Why: China now requires the CCC mark on power boards for domestic flights — security will confiscate non-certified ones at the gate. Check your power bank for the CCC logo before you pack, or pick up a certified one. 20,000mAh keeps a phone + camera running through long train days.

Nice to Have

Multi-Port USB-C GaN Charger

Why: One compact charger for phone, power bank and earbuds means fewer adapters fighting for the single hotel outlet by the bed. 65W covers most laptops too.

📶 Internet & Connectivity

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked in mainland China. Sort this out before you board your flight — not after you land.

Must Have

Travel eSIM (China data plan)

Why: An eSIM gives you data the moment you land — no airport SIM queues, no Chinese ID registration. Crucially, most travel eSIMs route through Hong Kong, so Google and WhatsApp just work. Install it the day before you fly.

Install Before Flying

A Reliable VPN Subscription

Why: VPN websites themselves are blocked inside China, so you cannot download one after arrival. Set it up on every device before departure and test it. Even with an eSIM, a VPN is your backup on hotel Wi-Fi.

🚄 Train & Flight Comfort

China's high-speed trains are excellent, but a Beijing–Xi'an run is still 4.5 hours. Small comforts matter.

Team Favorite

Noise-Canceling Earbuds

Why: High-speed rail announcements, station crowds, overnight flights — ANC earbuds turn all of it into background hum. Also doubles as your translator earpiece when using translation apps with drivers.

Nice to Have

Packable Neck Pillow & Eye Mask

Why: Overnight trains to places like Zhangjiajie or long domestic hops are part of the adventure. A compressible pillow disappears into your daypack when you don't need it.

🎒 Packing & Safety

China is very safe, but crowded metro stations and tourist sights reward smart packing habits.

Must Have

Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag

Why: Keep passport, phone and cards in front of your body in packed places like the Forbidden City or Chongqing's Hongya Cave at night. Slash-resistant straps and locking zippers buy real peace of mind.

Packing Cubes

Why: Multi-city China itineraries mean repacking every 2–3 days. Cubes turn a 20-minute hotel-room explosion into a 3-minute zip-up. One cube per city segment works beautifully.

Nice to Have

Compact Meds & First-Aid Kit

Why: Stomach remedies, motion-sickness tablets (those mountain roads to rice terraces!), blister care and any personal prescriptions. Chinese pharmacies are good, but labels are in Chinese and brands differ.

Pro tip from our designers: skip the huge suitcase. China's high-speed trains have limited overhead space — a carry-on plus a daypack is the sweet spot for trips under two weeks. You can buy anything you forgot on Taobao or JD and have it delivered to your hotel within a day or two (we'll show you how once you're here).
